Meetings of the Friends’ Board of Directors are open to the public and include an agenda of Board business, reports by committees, and discussion of projects and activities. Board Meetings are held at 12 noon in the large meeting room at the main library.
An Annual Meeting of the Friends is also open to the public and held each January at the library. A slate of officers for the upcoming year is voted upon at the Annual Meeting. The events of the past year are recapped and if awarded that year, the Breaking New Ground Service Award is presented at this time.

The speaker for the evening will be Alex Albright, Associate Professor in the Department of English at East Carolina University. He will share with us his North Carolina Humanities Council Road Scholar program “B-1: How NC A&T and UNC Integrated the Modern US Navy.”
Albright’s program follows the World War II band B-I, a 45-piece band comprised mainly of students at NC A&T. These students became the first blacks to serve in the modern Navy at a general rating, beyond the mess rank. They trained in the Navy’s preflight training school on the UNC campus but had to find housing in the local black community and became the first non-servant blacks to work regularly on the UNC campus. The Navy transferred the band to Pearl Harbor in May 1944 to help quell racial disturbances. Albright will summarize the history of blacks and musicians in the U.S. military and explain the complicated racial dynamics of North Carolina at the time. His lecture will include photographs as well as period documents and recordings.
This project is made possible by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
